When overridden in a derived class, obtains a decoder that converts an encoded sequence of bytes into a sequence of characters.
Namespace: System.Text
Assembly: mscorlib (in mscorlib.dll)
Syntax
'Declaration
Public MustOverride Function GetDecoder As Decoder
public abstract Decoder GetDecoder()
public:
virtual Decoder^ GetDecoder() abstract
abstract GetDecoder : unit -> Decoder
public abstract function GetDecoder() : Decoder
Return Value
Type: System.Text. . :: . .Decoder
A Decoder that converts an encoded sequence of bytes into a sequence of characters.
Remarks
The Decoder.GetChars method converts sequential blocks of bytes into sequential blocks of characters, in a manner similar to the GetChars method of this class. However, a Decoder maintains state information between calls so it correctly decodes byte sequences that span blocks. The Decoder also preserves trailing bytes at the end of data blocks and uses the trailing bytes in the next decoding operation. Therefore, GetDecoder and GetEncoder are useful for network transmission and file operations, because those operations often deal with blocks of data instead of a complete data stream.
Notes to Implementers
The default implementation returns a Decoder that calls the GetCharCount and GetChars methods of the current Encoding. Your application must override this method to return a Decoder that maintains its state between calls.
