Connecting to MySQL Flexible Server in Azure suddenly failing

I have a MySQL instance in Azure which has run fine for about 2+ years.

I have a Function App which inserts some data into on a monthly basis which has failed this month with the following error:
Result: Failure Exception: InterfaceError: 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error: error:1408F10B:SSL routines:ssl3_get_record**:wrong version number** Stack: File "/azure-functions-host/workers/python/3.9/LINUX/X64/azure_functions_worker/dispatcher.py"

So I have tried from my PC using MySQL Workbench and get the exact same error. Also tried with MySQL Shell 8.0.36 and the same:
SSL connection error: error:0A00010B:SSL routines::wrong version number

I ran a Wireshark whilst connecting and get the following response:
08S01Bad handshake

The fact I don't touch/change this thing suggests something in Azure has been tweaked to cause it. I last connected to it probably 2 or 3 weeks ago.

You mentioned that this was working but suddenly stopped with the above error message. It will be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the issue. I would suggest creating a support ticket so we can further investigate.

Thank you for reaching out. If your server is located in West Us region. yes, that issue is resolved. If your server is located in West US and you are still facing the same issue, then your issue might be related to something else.

I was able to connect after stopping and restarting the server instance.

Same issue here. I can restart the server, but after a while it happens again. And it happens with different clients.

I have the same issue and I haven't found a solution. Instead, I have to restart the MySQL Instance every few hours :(

Hi Wasim, unfortunately the makers of MySQL Flexible at Microsoft do not react on anything. I took a different plan for the service. It seems that my burstable instance ran out of "credits". But I am not sure, if this really was the problem. The logs or metrics did not show any clear issues. But since "upgrading" the MySQL I did not receive this error anymore.

Hi Sascha, thank you for getting back. I've seen one of your comment, mentioning about restarting, does it usually take time ? I am trying the same but its been in the restarting phase for over 10 mins. Just wanna confirm, if that is actually the case where it takes a long time to restart.

I noticed that it takes several minutes, usually 2-4 minutes until the server is restarted. But when I did this with the web interface, it sometimes takes up to 10 minutes to show it as running again. Seems the notification is lagging. But it should not take longer than 10 minutes.

Yes, that's what happened. I restarted from Azure portal itself and the status was showing Restarting but when I just refreshed, it was already changed to Ready status.

Not sure what's the issue with the portal. But anyways, it's working now. Thank you very much !

I had a similar problem: The database server using burstable compute (Standard_B1ms) would suddenly start using up all CPU credits and lock up. Only restarting it would (temporarily) fix the problem - until it locked up again a few days or weeks later.

I've since changed some server parameters and haven't had the problem since. I'm not sure which of the parameter changes did the trick (or if something unrelated changed), but here's a screenshot of my parameters in case it helps someone:

Is your server in the WestUS1 region? If so, we encountered issues today with a few MySQL servers in that region, resulting in connectivity problems for customers.

However, it appears that the issue has now been resolved.
